The Warm Story of Vanya’s Wool
Meet Our Wool Supplier
Allow us to introduce our supplier of wool — Vanya, our gient, gentle Landseer dog. He has lived with us on the eco-friendly Isle of Wight for seven years, surrounded by sea breeze, green hills, and endless walks. Each spring and autumn, Vanya gifts us his soft undercoat — and that’s where our story begins.

What Is Chiengora
The fine undercoat of a dog is called chiengora — a natural fibre that’s lighter, softer, and warmer than traditional sheep wool. Scientific studies show that dog undercoat can retain up to 20–30% more warmth while remaining breathable and lightweight. That’s why a small hat, a pair of mittens, or cosy socks made from chiengora feels so incredibly warm — like carrying a pocket of gentle sunshine on a winter day.

How We Work with Vanya’s Wool
When Vanya starts shedding naturally, we carefully brush his soft coat — no shearing, no stress. The fibre is then washed, air-dried, hand-carded and spun on a wheel into a delicate, slightly fluffy yarn. To make it strong and lasting, we twist it with a thin cotton thread, which helps each piece keep its shape while preserving the natural softness and warmth of Vanya’s wool. Everything we make — beanies, mittens, socks and scarves — is 100% natural and hand-crafted with love. Each piece carries a bit of Vanya’s calm, friendly spirit.

Does It Smell Like a Dog?
A fair question — and one we hear often. Properly washed chiengora smells just like any other clean wool. Even when damp, it carries a soft, neutral scent — no trace of “wet dog.” It’s a natural fibre, pure and kind to the senses. Fun fact: dog hair contains no lanolin, the waxy substance in sheep wool that often causes allergic reactions. That’s why many people with sensitive skin find chiengora pleasantly soft and easy to wear.
A Living Tradition
We aren’t the first to work with dog fibre. Centuries ago, the Coast Salish peoples of the Pacific Northwest raised special “woolly dogs” for their fine, soft coats. They spun the fibres into ceremonial blankets — symbols of warmth, care and connection. Our small project continues this tradition in a modern, sustainable way — transforming what nature gives freely into something lasting and kind.

Caring for Your Chiengora Piece
Hand-wash gently in cool water using a mild wool detergent. Do not wring or tumble dry — simply press out the water and lay flat to dry. Like all natural fibres, chiengora appreciates a gentle touch. It will reward you with warmth and softness for many winters to come.
Why We Love It
In a world of fast fashion, this is slow warmth — spun by hand, born of patience, love and nature. Each strand carries a memory: a walk by the sea, a quiet nap by the fire, the sound of paws on the wooden floor. That’s what makes Vanya’s wool special — it’s warmth with a heartbeat.
