The Truth Behind Your Toothbrush
Information that shocks
I was genuinely shocked when I came across this data from official environmental sources:
Global plastic waste from toothbrushes — 270,000 tons per year (270 million kg)
In the US alone — 1 billion toothbrushes are thrown away every year
The first bamboo toothbrush was mentioned in China as early as the 15th century
Every year, billions of toothbrushes end up here.
The truth about your toothbrush
Every morning we start with a simple ritual — brushing our teeth.
But how many of us ever think that this very act may be poisoning our oceans and soil with millions of kilograms of plastic?
Each year, the world throws away over 23 billion plastic toothbrushes.
With each one weighing about 12 grams, that adds up to nearly 276,000,000 kilograms of plastic polluting our planet — from toothbrushes alone.
Almost all of them end up in landfills or the ocean.
Why aren’t they recycled? Because they’re made from a mix of plastics and nylon, too small for recycling machinery, and often contaminated with toothpaste and moisture — making the process uneconomical.
If every discarded toothbrush from around the world were brought here, to our Isle of Wight, in just six years — by 2031 — the entire island would be covered by a layer of plastic toothbrushes. The whole island. In just six years.
From plastic to bamboo
The solution is simpler than it seems.
As early as the 15th century, bamboo toothbrushes were already made in China.
Our folding Brush-on-the-Go, included in every Eco Travel Gift Set, is made from MOSO bamboo — a species that grows up to one metre a day, needs no fertilisers, and is panda-friendly.
Bamboo products are naturally resistant to moisture and bacteria, don’t grow mould, and are fully compostable.
The smart folding design protects the bristles and makes it the perfect toothbrush for travel.

Small steps travel far. This one starts in your hands.
Small steps — big change
One change won’t transform the entire world.
But it can change your world — the one you hold in your hands every morning.
Cleaner, simpler, and more mindful.
Sometimes, big changes begin with something as small as a toothbrush. The main thing is to take that first step. We’ve already taken ours.
